The history of Grand Seiko is long and storied, absolutely worth the read for a prospective owner but in brief 1960 was the first release of a Grand Seiko watch. It was the first watch in Japan to be compliant with the standard of excellence of the Bureaux Officiels de Contrôle de la Marche des Montres. (COSC) Only 8 years later in 1968 a Grand Seiko movement was awarded the overall prize as the best mechanical watches in the Geneva observatory competition, showing that it was the Japanese, not only the Swiss, that could make the best mechanical watches.
The Spring drive is also no ordinary movement, famously the idea was started by the engineer Yoshikazu Akahane in 1977 pursuing the dream of an “everlasting” watch - his vision of a watch with the accuracy of a quartz watch powered by the reliability of a mainspring, accurate to one second a day. It took over 20 years, 600 prototypes and 230 patents but eventually the team succeeded and created the first spring-drive in 1999 with the reference number SBWA001. This Spring Drive needed refinement however and it wasn’t until 2004 did Grand Seiko first adopt the Spring Drive.
The concept was inspired by a bicycle rolling down a hill and using the brake to control the speed. In a Spring Drive the mainspring is your sole source of power and unwinds in a barrel the same as a mechanical watch. As the spring unwinds, the energy is transmitted to the gear train to move the hands, but also becomes a source of electricity. At the end of the gear train, the power relayed over from the mainspring spins a gliding wheel/rotor that generates the minute amount of electricity to power an integrated-circuit and a quartz crystal. Essentially, it is a completely normal mechanical watch that uses a quartz crystal to control the accuracy of the watch.
The Spring Drive movement in this watch is called the 9R86 and is constructed out of an amazing amount of pieces - 416 to be precise. The movement contains 50 jewels and has 72 hours of power reserve. This watch was a Grand Seiko Boutique only edition and is a perfect example of the engineering prowess of Grand Seiko.
