The first Grand Seiko reference with an automatic movement began life as the Seikomatic Chronometer. However the Swiss took exception to Seiko using the term chronometer when they didn't have an outside testing agency in Japan. Seiko responded by rebranding the Seikomatic as a Grand Seiko and establishing their own more stringent testing regime that they still follow today.
