This Panerai is the well known Luminor model line with a technologically difficult twist - an ceramic case. This watch is entirely made out a pristine black ceramic and is visually stunning - like if the watch was made out of the colour of the nights sky. Constructing complex shapes out of ceramic is not easy and carries with it a lot of technical demands. This watch also has a GMT Function, the date at 3 o'clock and small seconds at 9 o'clock. The watch has luminated arabic numerals and hands. As a result of the ceramic construction the watch itself is very light, the watch is also suitable for low-depth swimming with a water resistance of 100m.
Panerai’s aquatic history dates back to 1936. During the buildup to World War 2 the Italian Navy realised that the only way it could compete with the Allies’ warships was by using manned torpedoes: charges that had to be manually attached to the underside of a ship. In order to accomplish this the divers needed a large, very visible watch with some kind of luminescent-dialled watch. As a result the Italian Navy asked Panerai. Panerai was the supplier of precision instruments such as depth meters and the technologically cutting-edge Radiomir (first made by Panerai in 1916) radioactive powder which was ideal for underwater diving. The name "Luminor" derives from the replacement lume devolped by Panerai as the traditional "Radomir" (Radium) was incredibly toxic.
A little known fact of Panerai is that some of the original Panerai watches around the late 1930's were actually made by the then quite small watchmaker Rolex.
