For sale today is the Panerai Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic “Bronzo”.
Panerai first produced a bronze Submersible in 2011 in a limited edition of 1000 pieces. As one of the earliest available modern bronze case watches the edition was an instant sell out success. In 2017 Panerai decided to produce another run of 1000 bronze Submersibles this time with a blue dial. The watch we have listed here is number 240 from the second edition and is in good condition having picked up the beginnings of patina from regular wear. Sold with its box and paper set and our 12 month warranty.
This Bronze Submersible is fully constructed out of Bronze and comes in at a case size of 47mm. The dial is blue featuring luminous hour markers and dots. The date is at 3 o’clock and the seconds at 9 o’clock. The movement is the in-house Panerai automatic P.9010. It contains 31 jewels, alternates at 28,800 an hour and has a power reserve of three days. It also has the patented Incabloc anti-shock device and a Glueydur balance assembly. The watch comes in with a total of 200 components.
For a brief history of this piece it is important to recognise that Panerai, to the best of our research, were the first modern watchmaking company to make a watch out of bronze. This was in 1985 when Panerai produced 4 Bronze watches with the intention to sell them to the Italian Navy. This is because Bronze is naturally highly resistant to corrosion from seawater and has historically often been used in diving equipment. These 4 prototypes are exceedingly rare and valuable with one going for $290,000 USD. This was followed up much later by the modern reinvention of the bronze watch in 2011 with the predecessor to this piece. The result of the release of the Panerai Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days in Bronze directly led to the resurgence of the bronze watch trend we know today.
This industry-wide fascination with bronze watches could be because of the patina that they develop over time. A bronze watch will uniquely and quickly patina (change colour) in certain places unique to the lifestyle and use of the owner. This individually makes a bronze watch a romantic and personalised piece for a collector or enthusiast to own.
The overall success and attention of the Luminor Submersible Bronze “Bronzo” cannot be understated. Both the original in 2011 run of 1000 pieces sold out instantly as did this 2017 re-edition. Ours is number 240 of 1000 and is in good condition.
This watch comes with all of its original papers, box and limited edition plate. It also comes with our 12 month warranty.
Our pictures demonstrate the watch accurately but a bronze piece like this is best seen in person so come and see us.
